The Health Services Department supports student health, safety, and academic success by providing school health services, health screenings, emergency care, medication management, and support for students with health conditions. Parents and guardians are encouraged to notify the school of any medical condition that may affect their child's health, safety, attendance, or participation at school.
Contact School Staff

Contact School Staff

Please contact the school nurse or health clerk if your child:
 
  • Has a new or ongoing medical condition that may affect them at school.
  • Requires medication during the school day.
  • Has asthma, diabetes, seizures, severe allergies, or another condition that may require emergency care.
  • Has recently had surgery, a significant injury, fracture, concussion, or hospitalization.
  • Requires activity or physical education restrictions.
  • Has a change in health status that school staff should be aware of.
Immunization Requirements

Immunization Requirements

California law requires students to meet specific immunization requirements to attend school. Parents/guardians must provide the school with an updated immunization record when enrolling a student or when additional immunizations are required.
 
Requirements may include:
  • Immunizations required for school entry
  • Kindergarten/TK immunization requirements
  • Tdap requirement for students entering 7th grade

Medications at School

Medications at School

Students who need medication during the school day must have the appropriate medication authorization on file (renewed every school year).
 
This includes:
  • Prescription medications
  • Over-the-counter medications
  • Inhalers
  • Epinephrine auto-injectors
  • Seizure rescue medications
  • Other medications or treatments required during school hours
Medication must be provided in the original pharmacy-labeled or manufacturer-labeled container.
 
A written authorization from the student's healthcare provider and parent/guardian is generally required before school personnel can administer medication.Students may be permitted to carry and self-administer certain medications when authorized by their healthcare provider, parent/guardian, and in accordance with California law and district procedures.
 
Please do not send medication to school with your child unless the appropriate authorization and arrangements have been made.
Students With Medical Conditions

Students With Medical Conditions

Please notify the district nurse if your child has a medical condition that may require monitoring, accommodations, treatment, or emergency intervention at school.
 
Examples include:
  • Asthma
  • Severe allergies/anaphylaxis
  • Diabetes
  • Seizure disorders
  • Heart conditions
  • Mobility or orthopedic conditions
  • Other significant or chronic health conditions
 
When appropriate, the school nurse may develop an Individualized Health Care Plan (IHP) or Emergency Action Plan (EAP) in collaboration with the student's parent/guardian, healthcare provider, and school team.
Emergency Medications

Emergency Medications

The district maintains emergency medications as required or authorized by California law and district policy.
 
Depending on the school site and program, these may include (when available):
  • Stock epinephrine for suspected anaphylaxis
  • Naloxone (Narcan) for suspected opioid overdose
  • Emergency stock albuterol
 
Designated school personnel receive appropriate training for emergency response and medication administration.
Call 911 for all life-threatening emergencies.
Vision, Hearing & Other Health Screenings

Vision, Hearing & Other Health Screenings

School health screenings are conducted in accordance with California requirements.
Screenings may include:
  • Vision
  • Hearing
  • Color vision when applicable
 
Parents/guardians will be notified when screening results indicate that further evaluation by a healthcare provider may be recommended.
School screenings are not intended to replace regular medical, vision, or hearing examinations.
Illness: When Should My Child Stay Home?

Illness: When Should My Child Stay Home?

Students should remain home when they are too ill to participate comfortably in school activities or when their illness may pose a risk to others.
Please keep your child home and contact the school when they are experiencing symptoms such as:
  • Fever
  • Repeated vomiting or diarrhea
  • Symptoms of a potentially contagious illness
  • Unexplained rash accompanied by illness
  • Significant weakness or inability to participate in normal school activities
 
Parents/guardians may be contacted to pick up a student who becomes ill or injured during the school day.
Additional requirements may apply for certain communicable diseases.

Injuries, Surgery & Activity Restrictions


Injuries, Surgery & Activity Restrictions

Please notify the school if your child experiences a significant injury, fracture, concussion, hospitalization, or surgery.
Documentation from a healthcare provider may be required when a student needs:
  • Physical education restrictions
  • Sports/activity restrictions
  • Crutches, wheelchair, brace, or other mobility equipment.
  • Modified school activities
  • Other temporary health accommodations
Please provide updated medical instructions when restrictions are changed or discontinued.
Food Allergies & Special Dietary Needs

Food Allergies & Special Dietary Needs

Parents/guardians should notify the school and Nutrition Services if a student has a severe food allergy or requires a medically necessary dietary accommodation.
Students with a history of anaphylaxis should have appropriate emergency medication and healthcare-provider orders available at school.
School Entry Health Requirements

School Entry Health Requirements

California students may be required to complete certain health assessments when entering school, including:
  • School Entry Health Examination
  • Oral Health Assessment
  • Required immunizations
Families should submit completed documentation to their child's school.
